Give women freedom to decide
The debate over health care legislation and coverage of contraceptives misses the basic intent of the First Amendment and freedom of religion.
This constitutional protection is essentially for the protection of the individual's right to exercise self-judgment in deciding one's faith, and the moral behavior that follows from it. The early history of the U.S. has numerous examples of people leaving the European continent to escape religious dictates from governments and church institutions.
The U.S. Constitution looked to this long history of religious struggles, which encompassed political institutions stifling religious liberty and also included religious institutions that worked against the religious liberty of persons of other faiths.
